Our Curriculum

At St William’s Catholic Primary School, our curriculum stems from our Mission Statement:

‘By following Jesus’ example, standing side by side, we will nurture each other to fulfil our hopes and dreams’.

We are passionate about helping every child to fulfil their potential and become an all-round versatile citizen with the skills needed to succeed in life. We design our curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive of every child and that it addresses each aspect of how a child develops, progresses and grows both academically and emotionally. We recognise that we live in a rapidly changing digital world and at St William’s we want to enable our children to not just learn WHAT to think, but HOW to think by developing intellectual learning behaviours. ‘Thinking’ is at the heart of our curriculum because our intent is to future proof our children so they become independent and resilient citizens.

  • Intent

At St William’s Catholic Primary School, our curriculum stems from our Mission Statement:

‘By following Jesus’ example, standing side by side, we will nurture each other to fulfil our hopes and dreams’.

At St. William’s Catholic Primary School, our MFL curriculum intends to provide a high-quality languages education that fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.  At St.William’s, we are committed to ensuring that competence in French enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.  The teaching of French in KS2 supports oracy and literacy through speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so that the foundations are laid for further foreign language teaching at KS3.

  • Implementation

Children are introduced to French in KS2 and taught a progressive curriculum throughout the Key Stage using Language Angels schemes of work.  Language Angels covers the DfE statutory requirement for Languages at KS2.  New unit coverage each term enables children to develop early language acquisition skills through the three elements of grammar, phonics and vocabulary.  This learning facilitates their understanding of the patterns of language and how these differ from, or are similar to, English.  Units are categorised into types: core, early, intermediate or progressive. Grouping units into these teaching type categories ensures that the language taught is appropriate to the level of the class and introduced when the children are ready. Children will be taught how to listen and read longer pieces of text gradually in French and they will have ample opportunities to speak, listen to, read and write the language being taught with and without scaffolds, frames and varying levels of support.    Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their foreign language lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Knowledge and awareness of required and appropriate grammar concepts will be taught throughout all units at all levels of challenge.

  • Impact

Our MFL curriculum ensures that the children develop their knowledge of where different languages are spoken in the world.  Our children in KS2 will increasingly recognise and apply key French language.  Within each unit, subsequent lessons are progressive. Additionally, as children move through the units within the long-term plan, the level of challenge, stretch and linguistic and grammatical complexity increases. The children in KS2 will become more confident and ambitious with the French that they are learning.
